Thomas Ligotti’s “The Conspiracy Against The Human Race†eloquently and poetically describes the feeling already familiar to every outsider of life, to every pessimist, to those who know and have felt deep down that life is as Ligotti describes “malignantly useless.†The titular ‘Conspiracy’ refers less to a cabal of individuals and here to the necessity of conscious beings to develop methods of limiting the extent of their own awareness, of stifling consciousness by anchoring themselves to constructs of order and distracting themselves from the inherent meaninglessness of human existence in the thresher of life. Relating the inexhaustible void to primordial terror, and existential terror to horror fiction, Ligotti uses this ‘contrivance of horror’ to explain ideas present in the works of authors such as Peter Zappfe, Thomas Metzinger, Emil Cioran, Algernon Blackwood, HP Lovecraft, and Ligotti’s own works. Ligotti illuminates the driving forces of cosmic and existential horror and creates a sound and endearing defense for pessimism. Truly a must read for any fan of cosmic horror or existential philosophy.
A difficult read with repetative positions which leaves this reader anxious to move on.
Phenomenal book.
If you don't have a strong background in philosophy, you probably will get a bit lost. Its well written but a bit hard to follow.
I have plunged my hands down into the muck at the very bottom of the human psyche; I’ve done this just to know what’s down there—for my own writing. Horror for horror’s sake, literally.I don’t recommend you ever reading this book unless you truly want to scratch the surface of what truly makes Cosmic Horror so terrifying—and why this review is as obscure and unsubstantial as it is.In all seriousness, this book has given me, as a Christian, a unique perspective on purpose other than my own. The takeaway, I believe (and me being pessimistic as I am, but not pessimistic as a whole), is to be aware of yourself and the forces around you that are molding you. You are a puppet. At the very least, acknowledge it.But even more seriously, do not read this book if you are suicidal. It’s beyond terrifying in an existential sense.But to end things in an uplifting note: I learned a lot about Lovecraft; a lot about horror; and strengthened my own faith which differs from Ligotti’s.

Should be required reading.
