The first thing you see Brian Duniak’s Heavy Metal-worthy cover art, which might’ve been taken out of Richard Gere’s darkest fantasies: featuring what looks like Conan and Grod trading some rough blows with a pack of psychotic collie-sized gerbils. Flip to the back page, and you’ll see the opening lines from digests featured in the issue. This is a good place to whet your appetite before thumbing through this journal. This issue was my introduction to The Digest Enthusiast. If you’re a fiction author, chances are you’re cutting your teeth selling short stories to fiction anthologies,(or you already have) while working your way up to plying your trade as a novelist. The DGE is a fiction journal about fiction journals. It’s a breakdown of fiction journals, both existing and extinct. But it’s a lot more than that. It’s reviews, articles, interviews, and even some fiction. Alec Cizak, known in indie noir circles, for his edgy hardboiled prose, offers up a comedic piece, titled “Atomic Fuel”—a farcical look at what happens when corporate cubicle life meets addictive energy drinks. Sci-Fi author Edd Vick lays out the speculative fiction market, and veteran mystery writer BK Stevens talks Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, and Ellery Queen. There’s even a review of pin-up girl trading cards: Digest Dolls by Max Allan Collins. The best thing about the DGE is that it’s saturated with so many eclectic articles and pulp cover images, it allows readers to nibble: put it down, pick it up again, and it stays fresh. Lots of great insights and reviews here. An issue highlight for me was an entire breakdown of stories in Manhunt, 1953. If you want to know what’s going on in anthologies and fiction journals these days, or you’re looking for a pulp education, Issue 6 of the Digest Enthusiast is a good place to start.

A lovely publication that strikes a fine balance between being endlessly informative and just plain fun.

Another great issue. An interesting mix of genres and items.

Full disclosure: I have a short story in this issue of The Digest Enthusiast. I also work with the editor on Pulp Modern. My opinion is indeed biased, but you should understand my bias comes from having been introduced to The Digest Enthusiast over a year ago and being in absolute awe of what an independent journal created by someone who knows what the heck he's doing could look like. The Digest Enthusiast might strike some as a nostalgia journal, but it's more than that. In Peter Enfantino's article on MANHUNT, a monthly detective story digest from the 50s and 60s, he notes that the real reason to find this particular journal is to read the great stories within; The Digest Enthusiast should be required reading for anyone interested in American pop culture from the distant past. The articles are thoroughly researched and annotated (which is more than I can say for most textbooks in contemporary liberal arts programs). More effort is put into making The Digest Enthusiast a reliable source than most of the big name magazines you see on newsstands. The people who write for The Digest Enthusiast are SERIOUS. That's good for you, the reader. The absolute standout article for me in this issue showed a bizarre correlation between published notices about Sharon Tate and her gruesome death at the hands of the Manson family. It's spooky stuff, to say the least, and, once again, very well researched. You can't find much of anything at the newsstand that will both educate and entertain you like The Digest Enthusiast.

This is another excellent issue of The Digest Enthusiast. It combines its usual coverage of sci-fi, mystery and horror digests of the past with some interesting interviews and features on some publications I wasn't familiar with. I found the article on Bob Hope's 1941 self-published book quite interesting. It was also fun to revisit the work of Brian Aldiss, one of my favorite sci-fi writers of the 1960s.As always, one of my favorite features is the page of great opening lines. The best ones make me want to seek out the original stories in all their glory. If you have fond memories of the digests in their heyday, you'll enjoy this issue.
