I gave this a four only because I thought that there would be colorful pictures inside or at least more images. I bought this for my seven-year-old niece who loves horses. Unfortunately, it was a bit above her reading level. I think it would best fit a 10-12 year old girl.
My 9 year old daughter loves riding and horses. She reads a couple pages from this book everyday, I kid you not! She loves learning facts about stuff she is interested in and this book is packed with them in a fun, "9 year old girl" presentation. If your girl loves horses, buy this book!
I bought this for a 12-year old who's just beginning to ride and discover horses. She adores it, as does one of her best friends who's been riding for several years. Considering that she isn't into reading and books in general, I consider this a major win.
I got this for my 12-year-old granddaughter. I had bought her the Illustrated Book of Horses of North America which she loved but wanted something that told her more things about horses in general. I had been talking to her about the difference in fillies, mares, foals, colts, geldings, studs, etc and so much more. I had shown her where a horse's blind spots are, how they see, etc and just tried to fill her in on everything I could think of that she needed to know. This book does that. It's better than having me talk to her. She can read all these things and go back and refresh her memory anytime. I thought it might be a bit below her age range​, but it has a lot of info packed into such a small book that the writing style is actually very appropriate. I read it myself before giving it to her and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I purchased this book for my 9 year old granddaughter as a Christmas gift. She was going to be attending a Pony Club in the very near future and I thought this might be a great idea for her to familiarize herself with horses and all that it implies. She started reading it right away and said that she liked it very much. She is now part of the Pony Club and says that the book did give her a start on many of the new things she is learning.Very happy with this purchase and would suggest it to anyone who has a Horse-Crazy (or even Horse-Interested) girl.
Amazing book. It explains everything and more in a way me (being a young horse-crazy girl) can understand. Highly suggest for anyone beginning riding or even been for a while and still interested in learning more and a good read.
This is a nicely written book with lots of pictures. For about a fourth grade reading level. Print is rather small.
Very useful information, however, very cheap quality paper used for print and the book is black and white inside (on oddly washed out pink and white paper) with no photos and very small font. There is too much text and too little interactive content to keep a younger child interested. It is a shame as the information contained could have been put into a wonderful high-quality book for horse loving girls. I would not gift this to anyone again.
