About the Author

With over thirty four million books in print, Jan Brett is one of the nation's foremost author illustrators of children's books. Jan lives in a seacoast town in Massachusetts, close to where she grew up. During the summer her family moves to a home in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. As a child, Jan Brett decided to be an illustrator and spent many hours reading and drawing. She says, "I remember the special quiet of rainy days when I felt that I could enter the pages of my beautiful picture books. Now I try to recreate that feeling of believing that the imaginary place I'm drawing really exists. The detail in my work helps to convince me, and I hope others as well, that such places might be real."As a student at the Boston Museum School, she spent hours in the Museum of Fine Arts. "It was overwhelming to see the room-size landscapes and towering stone sculptures, and then moments later to refocus on delicately embroidered kimonos and ancient porcelain," she says. "I'm delighted and surprised when fragments of these beautiful images come back to me in my painting."Travel is also a constant inspiration. Together with her husband, Joe Hearne, who is a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Jan visits many different countries where she researches the architecture and costumes that appear in her work. "From cave paintings to Norwegian sleighs, to Japanese gardens, I study the traditions of the many countries I visit and use them as a starting point for my children's books."

Classic book with classic illustrations! Just beautiful. I bought one for friends who have a new baby and one to keep for ourselves! The Caribbean setting for this lovely older edition are just great...with lots of detail! I live in Central America and the details are very accurate. Highly recommended!

I love this book. The illustrations are amazing, and there is so much going on on each page: the weaving is different, the flowers are different, and each fish met along the way is added until the very final scene. So there is lots to look at and lots going on besides just the main story. I bought the hardcover edition as I often give it as a wedding present because of the love story between the owl and the pussycat, and I can't even count how many copies I've bought over the years. Highly recommended.

I have known this poem by heart since childhood and have been reciting it to my 2 year old great granddaughter. I wanted an illustrated version I could read to her. The illustrations in this are simply superb. Every time we read it together we find something new to look at and comment on.

Jan Brett is an exceptional artist/illustrator, and I love her work here, in combination with Edward Lear's humorous verse. Unlike Ms. Brett, I had never imagined quite where Owl and Pussycat went on their most fortuitous trip. Happily, in this volume she sends them to the colorful Caribbean where growth is lush and the living easy. As in all her creations, Ms. Brett provides images in stunning detail. Adults may notice the particulars of her work more than young children, but I anticipate that all will be left smiling because of joyful artwork in combination with silly verse that does, after all, tell a love story with a happy ending.

I find it sad so many of our favorite childhood books have been lost and no longer published. The Owl and the Pussycat is a rhyming story I can still recite by heart. I saw it on Amazon and order it immediately. Even though I have my original book, I wanted this beautiful pictorial exact same poem I loved so. One day I can pass it on to a dear child. Hopefully, a grandchild. Hint, Hint to my daughter!

This is my favorite Edward Lear rhyme, and I was eager to share it with my toddler. This illustrated board book edition is beautiful. Each page is complex and lovely and my daughter was captivated! Not only do you get the terrific love story of the owl and the pussycat themselves, but there's a wordless love story within the illustrations about two angler fish in love. It's a nice detail for observant readers and adds a layer of richness to the classic nonsense poem.

This is a charmingly illustrated version of this rhyming story. Below the illustrations for the main story is an undersea theme that follows the Owl and the Pussycat on their travels. Above the main story are beautiful illustrations of tropical flowers. I have given this book as gifts to many people. Readers of every age are enchanted buy the classic poem combined with the wonderful illustrations.

“The Owl and the Pussycat” by Edward Lear is a favorite children’s poem of ours and this beautifully illustrated version by Jan Brett is a classic which should be in every home library. Brett’s gorgeous pictures jump off the page and take the reader into the poem. The illustrations are bright and colorful, captivating for children with a Caribbean-inspired theme. We have read books of “The Owl and the Pussycat” by other illustrators, but none holds a candle to Jan Brett.
