Manga Classics: Sense and Sensibility

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Austen's tale of two sisters coping with the trials and tribulations of courtship in Regency England is the latest classic to receive a manga makeover. Upon the death of their father, Marianne, Elinor, and their younger sister and mother inherit nothing, and the primary heir, the girls' older half brother, provides them with merely a minimal income. Both sisters are initially unlucky in love—tenderhearted Marianne falls for the dashing but fickle Mr. Willoughby, while rational and stalwart Elinor begins to doubt Edward Ferrars's devotion—but all is put to right by the conclusion. King has necessarily condensed the story, and much of Austen's dryly humorous dialogue has ended up on the cutting-room floor. Still, though there's no replacement for the original, this is a wonderful edition to read alongside the classic. Even those unfamiliar with the author will quickly absorb the narrative and appreciate Austen's critiques of the institution of marriage and women's precarious position in society. Tse's artistic choices for bringing to life characters' personalities through visual cues are spot-on, and the illustrator expertly conveys drama through the characters' expressive countenances and the use of shading and imagery. VERDICT For fans of Austen as well as newcomers. Those reading the original for the first time may wish to have this insightful adaptation by their side.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

I adore all things Jane Austen. I’ve read all her novels. Yet. I enjoyed this manga version immensely! The font is large and easy to read. This is important. And the illustrations are adorable manga style graphics. I highly recommend this manga classics edition. It’s the perfect pocket size. It’s a joy. Perfect for cloudy day winter reading. I look forward to manga classics versions of PERSUASION and Mansfield Park, and Northanger Abby.

A great manga classic for everyone to have young or old, I can't wait for the remaining two to come out.

A classic reimagined in manga form!! Beautiful art makes you slow down and appreciate the story and characters. Hopefully there will be more coming out!

Just as good as the Pride and Prejudice I bought in store.

I am very familiar with the book Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. That said, this book was a bit of a disappointment. I loved the Pride and Prejudice manga by Manga Classics. It was different from the book, but it added a bit of fun flair. Sense and Sensibility, however, while sticking more to the book in general, managed to look shoddy in comparison. Sense and Sensibility is sadder in tone, but there are some other things that could've been improved like the way Manga Classics did some of their other books. The main thing I noticed was how much the artist skipped doing eyes in this book (made them little "shadows" and kept going). In addition many of the scenes looked rushed and had very little detail. I'm not sure if it was on purpose or not, but this book just looked like the artist didn't want to draw it. Maybe they thought it was too sad? The ending is good, maybe the artist should've spent more time on that instead.

Beautifull book and my wish really like it!!!

Sometimes, it's really easy to be an English teacher. The students can be interested in the literature or in the creative writing. Most of the time, it's a struggle. The kids typically don't see the intrigue or the entertainment in reading classic literature. Most of the kids will say that they think it's boring or dry because they simply don't want to admit that the archaic language tends to make these stories rather inaccessible. Many of my students struggle with reading pieces at their reading level, let alone anything that could challenge them. I mention this not to make my students sound unintelligent, but to emphasize the usefulness of graphic novels in the classroom.Cue in Udon Entertainment's Manga Classic Series.Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure to teach with this series. I would jump at the chance.I found their rendition of Sense and Sensibility absolutely delightful! They did a terrific job in a tremendous number of ways. In the interest of brevity, I will only discuss two here.First, I loved the illustrations. I have read graphic novels in the past that made it difficult to differentiate between settings and characters. There was no confusion in this one. It was so easy to tell which house the action was happening in and who the different characters were. And, as an added bonus, if there was EVER any question, King and Tse made sure to clearly and artistically label it so that confusion was swiftly blasted away.Second, the abridgment of the novel was done rather well. The story was told so well that I believe the most complex details could be easily understood by students. The language was kept rather similar to Austen's original writing, which would make for an easy transition from the graphic novel to the original should a person seek a more challenging or more "authentic" experience. The biggest issue that I found, however, was that the digital copy that I received started at the wrong end of the book. I hated having to click through to the last page and click on the wrong side of the page to turn it. This definitely took away some of my reading enjoyment. I understand, and appreciate, the authenticity of the manga style. I just think that this particular formatting was rather annoying.Overall, I absolutely loved this book and am excited to read others in the series.

Great way to enjoy this much-loved classic novel by Jane Austen!I love the way the artist drew Elinor and Marianne, bringing their personality into play in the way they look and dress. Elinor, very sensible and restrained with a fitting demure hairstyle, and Marianne, spontaneous and outgoing, with a lot of loose curls bouncing excitedly around her pretty face.I also really liked their vision for the three male protagonists. Edward, so neutral and hesitant, with his androgynous look, Willoughby so romantic but more than a little bit shady, hiding behind his Byronic curls and we can see the strain & heartache that Colonel Brandon's been living with reflected on his almost gaunt face.I think this was an excellent adaptation, keeping all the elements necessary to stay truthful to the spirit of the novel, to the main plot and the depictions of the characters. Although, I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the youngest sister, Margaret, especially in the beginning of the story. There was a small mistake in the beginning, where Mrs. Dashwood is referred to as John Dashwood's mother-in-law, instead of his stepmother, but that is soon forgotten.I very much enjoyed the insights at the end of the book, where we get some more information about the process of turning a classic novel into a mango comic. Both with regards to the storyline and the character design sketches.Very enjoyable read!
