Volume 3 in the Cambridge series starts off with a bang, continuing the narrative of familiar personages from the story of Roman Britain begun in volume two. Typical of the series is the continuation of helpful exercises, painless grammar introduction, and informative narratives about Roman life in general and in Britain in particular.
Just a wonderful intro to Latin. Nice blend of repetition and new material, interesting stories, good background material. I'm going to buy the next in the series right away.
The Cambridge Latin is the text being used at the University I attend in our Latin courses. The stories are very entertaining throughout the series. I have also enjoyed the application to modern English language as well at the end of every chapter. There are also sections in each chapter focusing on the historical context of the stories teaching the language. The series provides an all around teaching of Roman life.That being said, there are a few complaints. The move from Unit 2 to Unit 3 is a difficult transition. There is a lot more grammatical information in Unit 3 that Unit 2 does not prepare the student for. Also, the text likes to gloss words once in a story a few chapters back, use the word again but not gloss it. Since these words are not official vocabulary words, it can become confusing in translation. The text also has a tendency to throw new grammar information into the stories a chapter before it is covered in the text. This gets to be a little confusing. If the text stopped assuming the student remembers non-highlighted words or has previous Latin experience, it would be a 5 star text.
Before ordering this book, I'd worked my way through the Cambridge Latin Course books 1 and 2 (or, I should say, books I and II) and had enjoyed them tremendously. I'd tried to learn through Fredrick Wheelock's classic text and the various popular self-study books from different publishers, but the reading-based approach of the Cambridge series really made a difference. (I think the only way Wheelock works is in a classroom with a very experienced teacher.) Also good for people who actually want to read Latin is "Lingua Latina," which is a reading-based approach. The university where I work, Eastern Kentucky University, currently uses the Cambridge Latin Series for Latin 101 and Latin 102. I've already ordered Book IV in the series, and I hope to get to that later this summer.
