A BIG, beautiful reference book to add to our travel planning books. The large size means type font is easy to read. Maps are clear and well done, detailed but not cluttered. Each country section has city highlights, transport hubs, suggested itineraries, and color photos. This book is a great reference when you ask yourself, “Where do I want to go next?†or to get more detail on a specific country or area. Also just nice to browse and learn a little more about different places. The cover of the book has some kind of (nice) coating on it, making it resistant to moisture or dirt, as I just discovered when I put it down on the table :-). I already love this book. It would also make a lovely gift. Did I mention it was BIG?! Note the size.Addendum: I read reviewer below and it’s unfortunate about her book’s binding. I looked at mine again and it seems very strong, so I don’t know which is the anomaly. Also, in travel books, some are overviews, some are details. If you are putting all countries in one book, obviously this has to be a brief overview of each one. But books like this help me decide what I want to research further. For each of our travel destinations we utilize multiple resources. As for maps, when I want details I buy a map of the destination and/or download one on my phone (or use a map app). Sometimes when I look at a map, I don’t want it cluttered—just show me the major cities so I can see which are in which region. One time I had to do quite a search online just to see the major rivers of Europe without all the city details.Bottom line: it all depends on what type of resource you are looking for. We travel quite a bit and still enjoy sitting down with this book and browsing. It also would be nice for someone just starting their travels.
Please be aware this is NOT a normal atlas - while it has beautiful pictures it only focuses on 'tourist spots' and leaves large swaths of the globe totally missing. Apparently the only parts of the US of any worth are both coasts - the entire Midwest is missing. Personally I would not buy this book again without further research into what I was getting (mea culpa)
The binding is cheap. The book arrived with both the front and back separated from the binding. The layout is good and easy to navigate, but there is little or no info and small, uncontinuous maps of some countries—-especially for Africa, where I most like to travel.
My wife wore out the atlas she had been using. She loves the new one. Great purchase.
It’s a gift for my daughter (by her request)!
Loved so much!!!no words can express my happiness!!!
In the time of ubiquitously available Google maps, a coffee-table size world atlas might seem like a quaint anachronism, and its utility might seem limited.BUT: a well-designed atlas opened at random can inspire you to learn more about the world in ways that an application you have to prompt with a destination never can. Count me in the group of people whose interest in travel (domestic and abroad) began at a young age with explorations of maps in atlases (and yes, in encyclopedias too). Two people can sit together and pore over the broad pages of this book in a way you just can't with a smart phone or desktop display. The cartography in this atlas is outstanding, and the geographic information for each page is supplemented with destination (and both short and long itinerary recommendations) information for the pages open in front of you. Each regional section begins with descriptions of the major transportation hubs that will likely launch you farther afield. Is it perfect? Not quite. First, Lonely Travel guidebooks are rather unflinching in their frank discussions of risks to your safety and security, especially in more exotic destinations. This atlas does not address either topic in even a broad way. You'll just have to intuit (from places that are absent many --or any--) recommendations places that may be especially risky for ordinary travel. Admittedly this is somewhat beyond the scope of a traditional atlas, but the publisher has already gone there with the destination suggestions. A generalized heat map or even a list of references would remind us that the world on a map is not always the beautiful place that we see from space. Finally, my exploration of some the places in the world I know --and like-- best revealed some surprising gaps. For example, a California coastal exploration omitted both the Monterey peninsula (possibly forgivable) and the central coast between San Luis Obispo and Big Sur. We all have opinions about where we'd like to return (and where we'd recommend others go), but this was an editorial decision that surprised me.These are minor quibbles, and are far outweighed by the visual beauty of this volume and the resulting ability to inspire wanderlust.
