This book should be required reading for anyone responsible for the maintenance of their own boat. It details in simple drawings the best practices for maintaining, storing and recommissioning a boat. As the owner of an older boat, a 1972 CheoyLee Offshore 33, I spend a lot of time repairing and updating a lot of the hardware. I do all my own work, so I need to know what I am doing. This book has helped me compose to-do lists for haul out at hurricane season and before putting it back in the water. I recommend it to any boat owner but especially a sail boat owner who does their own maintenance.
Dennison Berwick challenges boat owners to stop being so intimidated by their diesel engines and to realize that basic maintenance is actually easy...but you have to do it. He's right of course and this message was written with me in mind; a non-marine professional recreational yacht owner. His pictures were instructive and his positive attitude was inspiring. I plan to immediately change my own attitude and perhaps even enhance my own boat enjoyment. It is thoughtfully well written and the illustrations make this topic accessible. I recommend it highly.
I work with a Sea Scout ship and we were given an old (1976) diesel boat. None of the adults (or youth) involved had any experience with diesel. I wish we had the book when we were just starting out readying up the newest Sea Scout boat for the season. We learned lots of stuff from youTube and other methods. If we had this book earlier, many things would have made more sense in the initial learning process.The drawings in this book are incredibly detailed and accurate based on what we have experienced. I look forward to the continuation of learning from this book.Great job, Dennison!
I read every marine diesel book I can get my hands on. This one is my favorite--right to the point. No unnecessary words (not even capitalization or punctuation lol). Very helpful illustrations and helpful charts The best part is that Mr. Berwick understand the little real-life issues you will encounter when you actually go to do that job, and he has great suggestions for dealing with them. That's where other books fall short, not to mention the fact that other books tend to be too wordy and technical. He even addresses designs you are likely to encounter, for example, different filter housing designs. Highly recommended.
I hope the author can carry through with the series he is proposing, as this will be a great resource for the boat owner looking to gain understanding and a sense of confidence in living with their diesel.I’ve spent uncountable hours under and inside the series of old VW Vanagons I’ve owned. I used a Bentley manual for the nitty gritty, hard details and John Muir’s How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive.The Muir treasure teaches much about the art of machanic-ing, just as Marine Diesel Basics does.Excellent book. Should be on the shelf alongside a manufacturer’s manual and anything Nigel Calder has written.
A remarkable resource and now one of my favorite references. It sits alongside other classics that hold a special place in my boating and marine repair library, like the classics from Nigel Calder. But Mr. Berwick's book adds not only an ease of use thanks to his excellent illustrations and explanations, but appeals to the trained or amateur engineer who desires to know "the why" behind many of the functions of his/her boat, and techniques and best practices that only come from years of experience. Many thanks for this great book!
Mr. Berwick's book is full of clear, concise procedures for all the maintenance jobs that need to be done on a Diesel-engined boat, with hints for making the jobs easier and avoiding problems. He has created many clear illustrations for understanding the tasks needed, with a list of tools and supplies required for each job. And his cautionary tales are also very instructive. I recommend his book to every sailor who wants to develop independence and confidence for maintaining her/ his boat for them selves..
Reviews were very good on this book but I found it to be too basic. It will serve as a good reminder of what to look for and do, but I was hoping for a little more in-depth since I'm fairly new to marine diesels.
