This book takes on indignities and atrocities from gender discrimination to ethnic discrimination, from sexual orientation prejudices to sexual harassment issues. The truth is, many books take on one or more of these topics, but this particular book does it in a way that bears witness to the triumph of the women who's stories and spirits are recognized in these pages. Through every interview in this book, the author delicately places the women's stories out in a manner, which allows for their strength, intelligence and unique capabilities to shine through the circumstances they faced daily. The author does not trample the interviewee's voice nor does he submit his own opinions and ideas, but rather he allows the incredible voices of the women cataloged to claim their own history and struggle. This book is incredibly interesting and well written. It opened my eyes and mind to new ideas and a better understanding of a history I had never thought on before. I finished this book in two days and could hardly put it down once I started. I would recommend this book to people who do not read often, to people who do not read non-fiction often and to avid readers alike. I bought copies for my friends and family members. There are many reasons to recommend books, but this book will truly inspire and enrich the lives of its readers. Bottom line.

I love this book. I thought it was going to be more text book like but im glad its not. It's really eye opening to the beginning stages of women's police work. I would recommend to any woman interested in a policing field.

I purchased this book as a source to help me prepare a book I am writing. this book is an autobiography of my work as a police officer and the struggles being one, especially a female officer in the South Georgia Area.

This was an interesting read. Having been in law enforcement for the last 15 years some in rural North Carolina I understand the challenges faced by these women. As a female you have to prove yourself much more than a male. I have gained the respect of my peers. It was not just given. I attempted to mentor a young female officer an guide her toward a successful path. She advised my superiors that I was intimidating her. I was demoted because of her claim. One day I hope she understands I was trying to save her from the mistakes I had made in the past. It's a shame women in policing are an officers worst nightmare.

Just got it and from start to finish, I just couldn't put it down. Should be a "must read" for all females going into LE.

An aptly titled look at the role of women in policing, and so much more. Adam Eisenberg's new book, tracing the personal histories of women cops in Seattle, is as entertaining as it is informative and insightful. You'll meet pioneering women who were treated abominably by their male peers and superiors. Of course, more than a few of these women refused to be victims, and they returned fire with the best of them--often with amusing outcomes. The women Eisenberg interviewed shared fascinating insights into how they learned to cope with the both the streets and the male-dominated cop culture. (I think it's important to observe: These richly detailed accounts could just as easily have originated in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or any other city in the country.)You'll find it all here: humor and silliness, tragedy and pathos, fear and fearlessness. Oh, and you'll also be introduced to a handful of honorable men whose selfless support taught new women officers how adapt to the demands and dangers of the job, whether on the streets or in the hallways of the precinct.A great read!

First person accounts of actual experiences by women in law enforcement. These accounts are not just more crime fighting stories by women. The personal interviews are about what they faced in terms of support and discrimination from their fellow officers and the public in a profession where your life may depend on those others. These women tell the real story of what it was like to be first in law enforcement and what it was like in the past decades to the present. Eisenberg sets the scenes for each account with a political and social narrative that provides the cultural climate of values in place at the time. It draws one deeper and deeper into the lifes of these women and their selfless and persevering characters. Its good history, good story, and overall a great read. Hats off to these women and Eisenberg. Well done.
