I picked this up after it came in the mail and started to read the first volume. I was reminded that Thich Nhat Hanh's writings don't make sense if you are not in the frame of mind to read them. I have always felt this way about the way he writes, that if you want a book to glance through while going on your busy daily life and hoping to find some pearls of wisdom to post on you social media, you are wasting your time. You have to get your mind out of warp speed and get down to the speed of life, of mindful life before opening the first book in this series. If you don't, save your money.Yes, he says the same thing in many contexts, but as the phrase says, "bares repeating", this needs to be repeated until it sticks. Western readers even so called western Buddhists have a hard time reading his style, because he is asking us to be mindful and to be kind and generous until it hurts, and then continue. The words might be few, but it isn't easy reading.
As a reader of Thich Nhat Hanh's other literature outside of the "How to" series, I was gifted "How to Love" a while back. It was absolutely wonderful, I went and bought this whole boxed set a couple years later! I think the best way to read these books is to read one page/entry per day and allow that to guide your thinking that day. I typically keep it on my bedside table and read my "daily dose" before my morning yoga/meditation routine, then again afterward to solidify it for the day. The books are a very small size so could also be kept in a pocket for reference throughout the day. Thich Nhat Hanh is very skilled at making Buddhist ideas accessible to the Western mindset. In particular, his "How to" series condenses these philosophies and presents them in short paragraphs accompanied by heartwarming illustrations. I could picture these books being very helpful for teaching children as well, perhaps by sitting with your child each morning and reading a passage together? Anyway, I highly recommend these books, especially when read in the one-page-a-day fashion.
These books on Mindfulness have literally helped me to overcome severe bouts of anxiety. I recommend them to everyone having difficulty with anxiousness or anxiety. I have several books on this subject, especially by Thich Nhat Hahn - these are small enough to carry one book in a tote bag and each book covers a different subject.
I'm just beginning to follow the path of The Buddha. Without a nearby Sangha or teacher, I was lacking many fundamental teachings, to which others may have access. In these books, the great Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, explains how to incorporate many daily activities into your practice. He speaks in language that's easy to comprehend and traces those processes back to the four noble truths and other teachings of the Buddha. I highly recommend this set for any practitioner or as a gift. I was not compensated for this review, however, their worth has been immeasurable.
I just love these books and this author!! Easy read, it's nice to just pick up and read from anywhere in the book at any time. I read something daily, great way to get me out of my own head. I also bought 2 more as gifts, the price was right and the box really nice to keep books together. I think everyone should have this set!
These books are small, and because of that, they can easily slip in to a purse or a back pocket (if you have decent sized pockets). In his usual fashion, they are constructed with so much care and love. Easy enough for a young reader to understand the concepts of, and deep enough for even a long-time student of Buddhism and philosophy to understand and appreciate. This is a wonderful gift for the free spirit in your life, or, anyone who may need a little reminding of whats important.
High quality printing, paper materials is very thick.Meaningful topics and life examples. Easy to understand. Definitely worth the money! Great set of books for gifts!
Ordered this set for myself since two of the books were referred in other reading. Decided on the set because of the great value instead of purchasing just the two and was not disappointment. Books are smaller than imaged but still very nicely made. Arrived on time and intact.
