This is another fantastic book by dave hoekstra. the folks he met and interviewed while camping with us at the iowa state fair are a true cross sample of the wide and wild variety of characters who call this rolling pasture home for 11 days - or more - during the dog days of august. the photography of jon sall are beautiful and artfully enhance dave’s narrative.and THAT’S just the state fair chapter!if you love camping, campers, and people who live life outside the lines, whether they are folks who you know from the national scene, or folks you’ll likely never run into but wish you could, you’ll enjoy the hell out of this book. buy it, read it, and take it camping with you. or at the very least, let this book be your free pass to go camping with all of us in the book.
This is a very lightly edited, if that, compilation of various stories concerning people who travel in RV's. The flow of the writing is beyond me since it is choppy and jumps around from thought to thought. It's almost unreadable. He also throws in his anti Trump views from time to time can try to make it part of the story line. Fine it's your book, but what does Trump have to do with the topic? Can anyone write a book these days without the politics? Left or Right.Very few photos of rigs and no interior shots to speak of. Not sure who the target market is for this book. It is not a travel guide. It is not a how to travel or fix things in an RV. It does not have very many photos of projects for ideas.The cover is appealing though, and that's why I picked the book up..Save your money and skip this book.
Fun little book that skims the topic of camping- a huge topic for sure. To have adequately covered each area introduced by this book you would need a couple volumes.I have a correction on the camper that is inside the Happy Camper bar in Chicago- it is mis-identified as an Airstream, however it not an Airstream, it is a Spartan. Kind of surprised at this oversight because it would be obvious to any vintage camper aficionado, especially someone who is into Airstreams.Also surprised that there was not more info about collecting /restoring old campers, as well as the vintage rallies and clubs. These people are keeping history alive and some of the restored trailers are true works of art. Maybe that’s the next book.
I loved this book and the writing and photos and tips are exceptional. Reading about the RV resort lifestyle and people who live on the road makes me want to sell the house and trick out my own camper. What a cool subculture and alternative to a stagnant life! Bravo to Dave Hoekstra for capturing the romance of life on the road.
